Youth Day Climate Strike – Union Buildings

Youth Day Climate Strike – Union Buildings

On the 14th of June and in commemoration of Youth Day, we invite you to join people young and old who will be rallying at the Union Buildings as part of a national Youth Day Climate Justice mobilisation #YouthDemandClimateJustice. We will stand with and support youth world-wide who have been striking from school to demand recognition of the climate emergency we face and the need for climate justice and action now.

Our own South African youth will be carrying a great load on their shoulders in the future because of climate change and interconnected issues like water and food shortages, floods, droughts, dwindling resources… At the same time transformative action on climate justice can create jobs, economic opportunity and address poverty and inequality, major issues facing our youth.

If you want to take action and learn more about climate change, come and join us at the Union buildings. We will have a range of speakers talking about ways to act on climate justice, a youth-led action delivering a petition to the Office of the Presidency, a theatre performance on climate justice by the Well Worn Theatre Company, and space for sharing messages and discussing climate change.

There will be an opportunity for the youth to share solutions and hopes for the future. Everyone is welcome to prepare something to share.

To bring along:
Banners, flags, funny hats, costumes to reflect something about the climate, something to make noise with. You can also dress up like animals, plants or species, to represent our plant and animal kingdoms that will also be affected by this climate crisis. Come with Lots of laughter, songs, hope and good humour. Although this is a serious matter it does not mean we cannot have fun.

Don’t’ forget: some water, sun cream or a hat and something to eat.

Please join us on the day. If you would like, let us know if you can join us, so we can know how many to expect and we would love to get to know you all!
